Helicopters rescue motorists after water mains burst
A dozen trapped motorists were rescued by helicopters and boats on Tuesday after a burst water main turned a commuter road in the Washington DC suburbs into a swirling river at rush hour.

The woman and child suspended in the rescue basket
Dramatic television footage showed a woman and her young child clambering out of their van and into a swinging basket lowered from a helicopter to escape the torrent, about four feet deep.

Several of those who escaped the raging waters on the ironically named River Road in Bethesda, Maryland were treated for hypothermia.

Shortly afterwards, two women were seen being pulled from a white Nissan into a boat that was tied to a helicopter to steady it. Once the boat had been guided to the side of the flooded road, the women, who were clinging to ropes, dragged themselves up an embankment to safety.

The 96-inch water main, installed in 1964, burst at about 8am and it was an hour before some of the rescues took place. Rescue efforts were hampered because the burst valve was underwater and could not be reached.

"I thought it might be a minor leak, then suddenly I stepped outside and 'My God!"' said Raj Bhansaly, whose house is on a hill about 50 feet from the flood. "It looked literally like the Potomac River."
